How might your business’s energy bill be affected during the coronavirus pandemic?

Many businesses have been forced to change their operations due to the coronavirus pandemic: shutting down their facilities, closing their stores or restaurants, and changing hours of operations.  During this time, energy costs may not be a top priority as businesses work to ensure the safety of their employees and families and shift their business models completely.  At Breakerbox, we understand how difficult this time may be and want to offer some details about what to expect when that next electricity bill shows up in the mail.  Together, we will get through this.

Will my power get shut off if I cant pay my bill?

Many utilities and suppliers have suspended disconnections and fess for late payments during this time.  Check with your local utility and/or supplier to see if they have waived these fees.

Should I expect any penalties for the reduction in usage?

If the contract you are currently on had Full Swing or 100% bandwidth provisions, suppliers should not penalize or charge you additionally for the reduction in usage.  If your contract has swing or tolerance band language included, suppliers may charge you additionally for usage outside of their forecasted amounts.  Check your contract and contact your supplier to notify them of this reduction, they may be able to work with you on reducing any additional costs. 

My business is using less electricity, my bill should be lower right?

Depending on the type of product you are on, this is correct. If you have a fully bundled price, you will only be paying for the electricity you are using. If you passed through demand charges like capacity and transmission, you would still pay the full pass through amount of your PLC * Rate * # of days in billing cycle. These won’t decrease even though you are currently using less electricity.
